On Wednesday, January 18th the Butler Golden Tornado Wrestling Team hosted the Hampton Talbots with the Section 3A title up for grabs. Both Butler and Hampton entered the evening with 4 and 0 win/loss records in the section.Butler was 11-2 on the season overall and Hampton was undefeated at 11-0.Both teams also came in with top 10 WPIAL AAA rankings, Butler held a ranking of # 10 and Hampton fresh off an Allegheny County Tournament Championship boasted a #6 ranking.
The dual started at 138 pounds where Butler’s Jesse Spohn put the Tornado on the scoreboard with a 5-1 decision. At 145 pounds Hampton picked up a major decision over freshman Jeremiah Bortmas. In perhaps one of the tightest matches of the night Butler senior Dakoda Collins trailed 1-0 from the bottom position. With 7 seconds left on the clock D.C. scrambled from his opponent’s leg ride and scored a two-point reversal with 3 seconds to spare (scramble at left). At 160 Hampton came right back with a pin and set the score to 10-6 in their favor. At 170 sophomore Ryan Hannon added a decision to bring the score to 10-9.At 182 pounds Butler junior Zach Weaver averted a solid takedown attempt and locked up a cradle to pin his Hampton opponent at 1:42 of the first period, putting Butler in the lead 15-10.After giving two forfeits at 195 and heavyweight and a pin at 220 Butler had dug a hole and trailed 28-15 with five matches left.Butler 106-pounder Conner Foust and 113-pounder Blake Caudill each added major decisions and brought the score to 28-23.At 120 pounds Butler’s Korey Caudill put the GT ahead with a fall at just one minute of the first period.Butler now led the dual 29-28.Nick Sutton battled hard but dropped a 7-4 decision with a set of back points out of a scramble in question from the Butler bench and fans. The Talbots led at this point 31-29 with Butler’s # 8 ranked senior Zach Reges matching up with Hampton’s #5 ranked Kevin Synan.Reges took the early lead with a first period takedown after fending off several attacks from Synan.Reges reversed Synan in the second to take the lead 4-2 after 2 periods. In the third Synan scored a hard fought escape, but was taken down by Reges in a very heated scramble with about 22 left on the clock.Synan scored a quick reversal and was frantically trying to turn Reges as time expired.Reges’ win tallied 3 points and gave the GT the 32-31 upset.
It was a great night for high school wrestling with talent athletes from both teams battling in front of a chaotic standing room only crowd at Butler “Tornado Alley” Gymnasium.Butler now takes a #6 AAA WPIAL Ranking into this weekend’s Clearfield Duals.Butler will attempt to defend last year’s title at the tournament and must win five duals to do so.
The Golden Tornado will enter the Section 3 dual meet championship at North Allegheny High School next Wednesday and wrestle Hopewell at 6:00.The winner of the Butler and Hopewell match will wrestle the winner of the North Allegheny and Hampton at 8:00 p.m. for the section dual meet crown. The losing teams from the first round will wrestle at 8:00 for the third place finish in Section 3.

Below is a post from Rick Smith of MSA sports network who broadcasted the match live at “Tornado Alley”!For you diehards … I have attached the link to the webcast!
I just wanted to congratulate both of these teams on a phenomenal dual meet tonight. What a fantastic competition. This, in my humble opinion, is what high school wrestling is all about.

Here's a link to me nearly having a coronary as I called the match on MSA Sports tonight...
